Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before your Ha Giang adventure — answered by the people who ride it.
Do I need riding experience to do the Ha Giang Loop?
No. We offer the option of riding pillion behind one of our experienced local "Easy Riders" — perfect for travellers without motorbike experience. If you choose to ride solo, we recommend at least basic motorbike experience.
How many people are in a group?
Our groups are kept small — maximum 8 travellers per English-speaking guide — to keep the experience personal and flexible.
Can the tour be customized?
Absolutely! Contact us with your preferred dates, group size and interests and we will design a private tour just for you.
How do I book a tour and what is the deposit?
Pick a tour from our website and submit the booking form, or message us on WhatsApp. We confirm availability within 24h and send a secure link to pay a 30 USD/person deposit. The deposit is non-refundable but transferable. Balance is paid in cash on arrival.
Can I customise an itinerary for our group?
Yes — many of our trips are custom-designed for families, couples, photographers, or rider groups with specific interests. Send us a message with your dates, group size and what you would love to see — we will reply with a tailored plan within 24 hours.
Do I need a special licence to ride here?
Officially, foreigners need an International Driving Permit type A1/A (1968 Vienna Convention). The 1949 IDP (some US/Canada drivers) is NOT recognised in Vietnam. If you do not have the right licence, choose our Easy-rider option (ride pillion with a local driver) — perfectly legal and just as much fun.
What should I pack?
Layers (it can go from 28 °C in the valley to 8 °C on the pass in October), waterproof jacket, sturdy closed-toe shoes (no flip-flops), sunglasses, sunscreen, a small day-pack and a power bank. Forgot something? We have spare gloves, scarves and ponchos at the office for free.
Is the Ha Giang Loop suitable for beginners?
Yes! The majority of our riders have never ridden a motorbike before. We start with a 30-minute practice session, choose an automatic 110cc bike, and ride at the back of the group with you for the first day. If you are not confident, we offer the "Easy-rider" option (ride pillion with a local driver).
What is the best month to ride the Ha Giang Loop?
March to May and September to November are ideal — dry roads, mild temperatures (18–26 °C) and the rice terraces are golden in October. June–August has heavy rain and landslide risk. December–February is misty and cold (8–18 °C) — beautiful but pack layers.
What is your cancellation policy?
Full refund if cancelled 7+ days before the tour. 50% refund if cancelled 3–6 days before. No refund for cancellations within 48 hours of the tour start.
What forms of payment do you accept?
Deposit (30 USD/person): bank transfer, PayPal, Wise, or MoMo. Final balance: cash on arrival (USD or VND at the day rate). For larger custom tours we can also accept SWIFT international transfer.
Can I pay everything by card on arrival?
Unfortunately we only accept card (Visa/MC) up to the deposit step. Balance is best paid in cash (USD or VND) — Ha Giang town has international ATMs near our office if you need to withdraw on arrival.
Is it safe to ride? Do you provide insurance?
Safety is our number-one priority. All bikes are serviced before each trip, helmets meet international standards, and every group is led by a senior guide with first-aid training. We strongly recommend international travel insurance — we can recommend providers if needed.
What if I crash or my bike breaks down?
A support vehicle follows the group every day with spare bikes, tools and a first-aid kit. Minor falls happen occasionally on gravel and we will help you up, dust you off, and fix scratches. For anything more serious, our guides have direct contact with the nearest hospital and our office.
What is the best time of year to visit Ha Giang?
September to November offers the best weather and golden rice terraces. March–April is buckwheat flower season. December–February is colder but stunning with mist and quiet roads.
Is travel insurance required?
Yes. We strongly recommend a comprehensive travel insurance policy that covers motorbike riding in Vietnam.
What is included in the tour price?
All homestays + breakfasts, lunches & most dinners, your bike (or seat behind a driver), helmet, knee/elbow pads, raincoat, fuel, English-speaking guide, all entrance fees and a support car for luggage. NOT included: international travel insurance, alcohol, and personal souvenirs.
How do I get to Ha Giang from Hanoi?
We offer a comfortable VIP sleeper bus (departs Hanoi 20:00, arrives Ha Giang 03:00) for 14 USD or a limousine cabin bus for 17 USD. We also arrange a private car (4 hours, 95 USD for up to 4 people). Bus tickets are added when you book the tour.
